Jessica Howard Plus Size Gowns | Elegant Evening & Formal Wear
Our embellished cap-sleeve gown brings refined elegance to every black-tie occasion. The bodice features hand-placed sequins and beading that catch the light beautifully, while the soft A-line skirt drapes in fluid chiffon layers. We designed this silhouette with a shaped empire waist that defines your natural curves without clinging, and the cap sleeves offer just enough coverage for formal events.

Every Jessica Howard plus size gown is cut from fabrics we've tested rigorously for drape, recovery, and comfort. Our chiffon overlays are sheer enough to catch movement but substantial enough to skim rather than cling, while our jersey knits contain just enough spandex to hug curves without binding. We source polyester blends that resist wrinkles during travel — shake out the gown when you arrive, and it's ready to wear.

Sizing & Fit Philosophy
True to Size With Room to Move
We grade our patterns specifically for plus sizes — not by simply scaling up a misses block. That means bust, waist, and hip measurements follow proportions that reflect real body curves, and armholes are positioned to avoid gaping or binding. Our size chart uses your natural waist and fullest hip measurement as anchors, so consult it before ordering.
If you’re between sizes, we recommend sizing up for gowns with structured bodices and sizing to your largest measurement for jersey styles. Empire waists sit just under the bust, so measure there rather than at your natural waist. For length, our floor-length gowns are drafted for a 5’5″ frame wearing 3-inch heels; petite or tall customers should plan for hemming or consider our fit guide for styling tips that work with your proportions.

Styling for Black-Tie & Formal Events
A Jessica Howard gown is the anchor of your formal look, and accessories should complement rather than compete. For beaded bodices, keep jewelry minimal — a pair of drop earrings or a simple bracelet is enough. If your gown has a V-neck, a delicate pendant draws the eye down and elongates the torso. For high necklines, skip the necklace and focus on statement earrings.
Shoes matter more than you’d think. A low block heel or wedge offers stability for outdoor weddings, while a classic pump works for ballroom events. We love a metallic sandal with chiffon gowns because the ankle strap echoes the lightness of the fabric. Choose a clutch or small frame bag in a complementary metal tone — gold with warm-toned gowns, silver with cool jewel tones. If the dress has cap sleeves, a shawl or pashmina in matching chiffon adds coverage for religious ceremonies or air-conditioned venues without hiding the gown’s silhouette.

Your Questions About Jessica Howard Plus Size Gowns
Our gowns are true to size when you follow the size chart measurements. We draft patterns specifically for plus proportions rather than scaling up misses sizes, so bust, waist, and hip ratios reflect real body curves. If you’re between sizes, we recommend sizing up for structured bodices with zippers and sizing to your largest measurement for stretchy jersey styles. Measure your bust at the fullest point, your natural waist (usually just above your belly button), and your hips at the widest part, then compare those numbers to our chart.
Chiffon and embellished gowns should be dry cleaned to protect the beading and delicate fabric layers. Our jersey knit gowns can be hand-washed in cold water with a gentle detergent — turn the gown inside out, submerge and swish gently, then roll in a towel to remove excess water and lay flat to dry. Never wring or twist the fabric, and avoid machine washing even on a delicate cycle, as the agitation can distort seams and stretch out the knit.
Our floor-length gowns are drafted for a 5’5″ wearer in a 3-inch heel. If you’re taller or prefer a lower heel, plan for hemming. Petite customers under 5’3″ will likely need at least two inches removed. The gown should just graze the floor when you’re standing still — if it puddles around your feet, it’s too long and poses a tripping hazard.
Our gowns with power mesh lining offer built-in smoothing, so shapewear is optional. Styles with empire waists and ruched bodices naturally camouflage the midsection without additional undergarments. If you prefer extra support, choose seamless shapewear that ends at mid-thigh to avoid visible lines under chiffon skirts. For gowns with deep V-necks, a stick-on bra or low-plunge bra works better than traditional underwire.
We recommend ordering at least three weeks before your event to allow time for delivery and any alterations. Standard shipping takes five to seven business days, and rush options are available for an additional fee. If you need hemming or sleeve adjustments, factor in another week for a tailor. For custom or special-order colors, allow four to six weeks.
Our standard gowns are drafted for a 5’5″ frame, but we occasionally release petite and tall versions in select styles. Check the product page for length options. If your preferred gown doesn’t come in petite or tall, a local tailor can adjust the hem easily — chiffon and jersey are both straightforward fabrics to alter. Bring the shoes you plan to wear to your fitting so the tailor can pin the hem at the correct height.
We accept returns within thirty days of delivery for unworn gowns with original tags attached. The gown must show no signs of alterations, wear, or damage. Pack it in the original garment bag if possible, print the prepaid return label from your order confirmation email, and drop it at any carrier location. Refunds are issued to your original payment method within five to seven business days after we receive and inspect the return.
